A package sewage treatment plant treats wastewater more actively than a septic tank, but sludge still accumulates and must be removed. We help you compare local operators for the desludging part of that maintenance.
Why treatment plants still need desludging
Biological treatment does not make solids disappear. Sludge builds over time and, if left beyond the system’s design capacity, can reduce treatment performance or cause solids to carry through the plant.
Current Environment Agency guidance for England says sludge should be removed before it exceeds maximum capacity and recommends at least once a year or in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Natural Resources Wales says treatment plants require regular desludging and should be maintained according to the manufacturer’s specification.
What should I tell the operator?
- Make and model, if visible on the control panel, lid or service paperwork.
- Population / property size if the exact plant capacity is unknown.
- Last desludging date if known.
- Access and hose run from a suitable tanker parking point.
- Any alarms, smells or performance problems so the operator knows this may not be routine maintenance.
Do I need the same company that services the plant?
Not necessarily. Some servicing companies provide or arrange desludging, while other sites use a separate registered tanker operator. If your manufacturer or maintenance contract specifies particular requirements, follow those instructions.
After emptying
Normal operation should continue in line with the plant manufacturer’s guidance. If alarms remain active, pumps or blowers are not working, or discharge quality is poor, the plant may need a competent service engineer rather than further emptying.

I do not know the make or model. Can I still request prices?
Yes. Choose treatment plant and provide the best details you have. Photos or model information can be requested later if an operator needs them.
Will emptying reset an alarm?
Only if the alarm is related to sludge level or a condition resolved by desludging. Mechanical or electrical alarms may require servicing.
Should all sludge be removed?
The correct procedure depends on the plant design and manufacturer. A competent operator should follow the appropriate system guidance.
